Sega Will Be Reviving Even More Franchises by 2023

The past five years have seen many remakes, reboots, and remasters from Sega. Spearheaded by Sonic Mania in 2017, we’ve seen new installments in the Super Monkey Ball and Yakuza franchises alongside a somewhat controversial (at launch, anyway) remake of Sonic Colors. However, according to a recent report, the release of Sonic Origins in the coming month won’t be the end of this renaissance period for the company.

The report forecasts a surge in sales due to a “significant increase in new title lineups.” Titles such as Sonic Colors Ultimate and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania are referenced as a part of the company’s plan to keep several franchises alive, relevant, and healthy in the years to come.

The report also claims that Sega has a total of 13 titles in the works that should be released by the end of 2023. While we are aware of Sonic Frontiers and Soul Hackers 2, more than half of these projects are currently under wraps.

Some sources have pointed to the return of Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio under the previously announced Super Games initiative. However, it concerns us that suggesting that these revivals may be designed to compete with Fortnite. As much as we all would like those properties to return, I don’t think many would want them to do so under a Free To Play structure.

I think there’s a gold mine of untapped history that Sega ought to explore while nurturing this plan. A pocket of Sega fans (especially in the UK) have been pining for a Sega Master System Mini. Considering that both Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy have seen much love in the past two years, a multiplatform compilation would be excellent if not a dedicated micro-console. The resurgence of the beat ’em up means this would also be a great time to expand on the 1995 Genesis release Comix Zone. I also think a revival of the cult classic Altered Beast would push numbers based on the name alone. We’ll have to wait and see what they’ve got in store for us in the coming year!
