In celebration of One Piece’s 25th anniversary, Bandai Namco Entertainment has announced One Piece Odyssey, an open-world JRPG based on the long-running anime/ manga, One Piece. The One Piece Odyssey trailer was spectacular, but It’s possible you missed a few things, so let’s go over them. First, here is everything we know about the One Piece Odyssey.
One Piece Odyssey is an upcoming console JRPG published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and developed by ILCA, Inc, best known for the Pokémon brilliant diamond and Shining Pearl Remakes. We can tell they’re a renowned studio; thus, working on One Piece Odyssey seems only logical.
The One Piece Odyssey will be a JRPG with Oda’s original story and designs. As with Pirate Warriors 4, where he wrote an entirely new ending for Wano. We’re curious to see where Oda leads us as he writes an entire plot independent of what’s happening in the manga.
One Piece Odyssey Release Date
The game One Piece Odyssey will be released sometime in 2022. Although Bandai Namco didn’t give a specific date, it’s worth noting that “One Piece Day,” which coincides with the anniversary, falls on July 22. So we can expect a release around that time or, at the very least, an announcement of a release date during the celebrations.
One Piece Odyssey Story
The “adventure” theme is the game’s main focus, as the developers believe it to be a fundamental aspect of the One Piece identity. The following is the official story description provided by the game’s publisher, Bandai Namco:
“During their voyage, the Straw Hats, led by Monkey D. Luffy, are swallowed by a huge storm at sea. They end up on a mysterious island full of nature amidst the storm and become separated from each other. The crew set outs on a new adventurous journey filled with wonders of a raging nature, powerful enemies, and strange encounters with island locals.”A Mysterious Island
One Piece Odyssey Characters
While Bandai Namco confirmed that all the straw Hats would be playable, we noted Jinbe was missing from the trailer, which is likely because the game has been in development for 2-3 years, and the anime hasn’t yet reached that point.
Since Jinbei isn’t present, we conclude that the power scaling will be Pre-Wano arc. Additional, prominent characters we’ve seen featured in the trailer include Smoker and the Gorosei (Five elders). However, the game will also feature new characters, enemies, and monsters designed by Oda.
There does appear to be one significant reveal at the end of the trailer, where we see someone pick up Luffy’s straw hat; based on the shoes, it appears to be a female character but doesn’t look familiar. Maybe a custom character? Who knows!
We look forward to an answer in the future.
One Piece Odyssey Platforms
One Piece Odyssey will be available on both current and previous-generation consoles. The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S; however, the Xbox One is not. The game will also be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. At this moment, there are no plans for a Nintendo Switch release.
One Piece Odyssey Gameplay
They haven’t shown us the UI for the gameplay yet, but we know it’s a JRPG. It’s unclear whether it’ll be a turn-based or action-based JRPG. However, the majority of fans believe it will be a turn-based JRPG. Whether it’s turn-based or not, we’re anticipating a blast. Let’s see how it goes.
Lastly, the game is advertised as an open world, but the gameplay in the trailer appears to be reasonably straightforward. So we’ll have to wait and see how much freedom we have or if it’s just one of those games advertised as open-world but are just scripted.
