One of the most anticipated manga by Gege Akutami is getting an anime is Jujutsu Kaisen. Viz Media licensed the manga at the end of 2019 and they started hitting stateside. The manga was already a big hit in Japan and listed as the next big Shonen after My Hero Academia. We got a preview copy of Volume 1 and did a review for those that are unfamiliar. Now the anime is being licensed in North America and it will be available Fall of 2020.
First reported by Crunchyroll News and Joseph Luster the anime is licensed solely by Crunchyroll. Upon getting this news everyone here was shocked and wowed by the big move by Crunchyroll. As we analyze the acquisition though it only makes sense. When the anime was greenlit, they were already addressing the cast and had most of the key roles in place. The bigger question was who the animation studio would be to handle the title. Many rumors took place and finally, Studio MAPPA cleared those rumors as the studio behind the anime.
That is not all though Studio MAPPA has been on a roll grabbing up titles. Their work has always been great and on par with the best in anime. Along with original shows being grabbed for Netflix, they took over animation production of the final season of Attack on Titan. Crunchyroll Originals dropped their latest big project for this Summer season The God of High School(GoHS). The South Korean title would need an animation studio. In comes MAPPA who has some Korean employees and directors it made the pairing perfect.
So, we have Crunchyroll building this mega relationship with MAPPA, meanwhile, everyone is in the fight to acquire the North American rights to the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. What have you done for me lately? Crunchyroll hired them for GoHS and the show is a huge success thus far. We will assume that had a bunch of pull to get sole rights to the North American streaming rights of Jujutsu Kaisen. As the house that Crunchyroll built, we are excited and pumped to watch this show!!
