Jujutsu Kaisen Storms U.S. Shores

Jujutsu Kaisen is the manga just recently licensed by Viz Media. It has been sending shockwaves overseas through Shonen Jump for some time. Hardcore Manga fans have been trying to get a piece of the manga in any way possible. Most have only heard about it in fan groups and chat rooms. Now it has finally hit U.S. shores though and in a big way.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Supernatural, Horror, Shonen manga. Immediately after reading the first volume many different anime and manga came to my mind. Our protagonist Yuji Itadori is introduced to us quickly with zero back story. All we know is that he’s naturally gifted and on the level of an enhanced human. This means his strength, speed, and durability are much higher than the average human high schooler. We don’t know why or even how that came to be about.

After some circumstances, Yuji eats a finger of one of the worst cursed demons on the planet. Not only does he revive the demon by giving him a host body, Yuji’s own body. He also manages to manifest the demon’s abilities and somewhat maintain control over his body. Jujutsu sorcerers that are always on the hunt for the body parts of the great demon Sukuna happen upon Yuji. Now that they know about Yuji, they give him an ultimatum. Instead of executing him they will let him live if he helps them collect and eat all the body parts of Sukuna. Yuji only agrees because of his grandfathers dying last words and will. This begins the great adventure of Jujutsu Kaisen.

The author and Illustrator Gege Akutami draw this world beautifully. The mindset and creativity to come up with various illustrations that we have never seen are great. Akutami’s strength thus far is in the appearance of demons, curses, and familiars that make up this world. His writing is very fast-paced, and you must grab the details as you cruise through the adventure that is Jujutsu Kaisen.

We see why this manga is very popular. We recognized many different elements of this manga that we’ve seen in some of the top manga and anime shows. Take Bleach, for instance, a high school boy who can see souls and we never learn why until many seasons later. Channeling a demon inside of you will remind us of Naruto. Jujutsu Sorcerers are like Exorcist so shows like Blue Exorcist, D. Gray-man, and Soul Eater come to mind. There’s tons of blood and juicy gore. It recalls the darker side of Tokyo Ghoul.

The end of volume one of this manga will have you hooked and immediately wanting the next volume. Not to mention an anime has been greenlit for the manga. They already have cast voice actors for the four main players of the manga. In the leading role is Junya Enoki as Yuji Itadori and his supporting character is Yuma Uchida as Megumi Fushiguro. There isn’t any word on the companies affiliated with the project or any production dates. For now, get the manga Jujutsu Kaisen from Viz Media now in print or digital through Shonen Jump!!
