It looks like Sega’s iconic blue blur won’t be the only video game character seeing a film adaptation next year.
PONY CANON has announced that an anime adaptation of the popular piano-centered rhythm game, Deemo, is in the works at Anime NYC. Those who are wary of video game to film adaptations can take comfort in knowing that an exceptionally strong team is behind this one. Signal MD will be joined by Production I.G (well known for creating Attack on Titan as well as GHOST IN THE SHELL) to bring Rayark Games’ musically enchanted world to the big screen.
Some big names in the anime industry will have their hands in the development process as well. Junichi Fujisaku (screenwriter for “GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX”) takes the role of Executive Director. Yuki Kajiura, responsible for the theme songs for popular series such as Sword Art Online, has been tasked with composing the theme song for the film.
Unlike a number of rhythm titles, Deemo is home to an intricate plot with a few twists and turns to keep the player engaged as much as the traditional story-driven game. It centers around a young girl named Alice, who has fallen from a trap-door in the sky and has found herself in the castle home of the titular character. Deemo takes it upon himself to aid the girl in finding her way home after discovering that a tree sprouts from his piano, growing towards the heavens upon the successful completion of musical numbers. As the game progresses, the player learns that there’s more to Deemo than meets the eye and the story takes a tear-jerking turn at the very end.
If you somehow haven’t played the original 2013 game, the full version can be experienced on both Android and Apple devices for the price of a hamburger. The Nintendo Switch saw a direct port and there’s also an enhanced version available on PS Vita (props if you still have one of those!). Last but not least, a remake with PSVR and Move functionality recently dropped on PS4.
