Sound! Euphonium: The Movie “Our Promise: A Brand New Day” Review

Sound! Euphonium is back with the next movie franchise installment for fans nationwide in select U.S. theaters. Fathom Events along with Eleven Arts brings us the new story “Our Promise: A Brand New Day.” It once again stars the protagonist Kumiko Oumae and jumps in right where we left off in the last installment.

The series is created by Ayano Takeda and the movie brings back Jukki Hanada to write the screenplay. Hanada is known for writing screenplays for a number of great anime films and series. Films such as the last installment of Sound! Euphonium- Welcome to the Kitauji High School Concert Band, Love Live! The School Idol Movie, No Game, No Life: the Movie- Zero, and Steins Gate the Movie: Load Region of Deja Vu.

Our Director makes a return Tatsuya Ishihara mostly known for the entire series and movies of Sound! Euphonium, Kanon, Clannad, and Air. Ishihara adds the added style in this movie of cellphone videos in the film. Something you don’t see a lot in anime is the viewpoint of the character filming. The film looks beautiful with production from Kyoto Animation, Bandai Namco Arts, Pony Canyon, and Rakuonsha.

The movie jumps right in when Shuichi confesses that he likes Kumiko and they begin dating. We find that in Kumiko’s second year at Kitauji High School she has now become a leader in the bass section of the school’s concert band club and head Euphonium player.

Kumiko Oumae

Kumiko certainly grows a lot more as a person and leader in the film. She now has to take control of her instrument section and also deal with other bandmates in the bass section. As a person, she learns she has to personally get involved with others, deal with emotions and some of their pasts. Only through Kumiko’s past experience can she understand her Kouhai.

As the band is trying to get to the nationals and compete for gold. They must get better and fill the gaps for the talent lost by the graduating class. Many conflicts arise within the group and Kumiko even questions if it’s a good time to be dating Shuichi.

The roster is set for those that will compete in the band to go to nationals. Everything that has gone on, and Kumiko’s senpai in the audience, what will be the results of Kitauji High School’s Concert Band? What will the future of the band look like?

Erica Mendez

Eric Mendez a great voice actor will actually voice Kumiko in the English Dubb. You may know Eric Mendez from roles like Retsuko from Aggretsuko, Raphtalia from The Rising of the Shield Hero, Sailor Uranus from Sailor Moon Crystal, and Megumin from KonoSuba.

This movie looks beautiful, the animation is great, and the music is very moving. The slice of life film about growing up and being a band otaku is nice.  Everyone will enjoy this film and musicians will really love this franchise and movie. Go see it July 11th (Sub) and July 15 ( Dubbed).  #anime_eupho
