“In romance, the first one to confess their love is the loser.”
Aniplex of America’s brand new romantic comedy, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, was announced today. It has been confirmed to begin streaming on Hulu, Crunchyroll, and FunimationNow. The hilarious and quick-witted anime is based on Aka Akasaka’s manga series published in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine. The manga is on its eleventh volume in Japan, amassed over 2.8 million copies and currently holds the title for the number one selling romantic comedy series currently still being serialized in a weekly manga magazine.
I’m really shocked that the show will be hitting this many streaming sites. It’s the first signs of the new anime community with the break up of Funimation and Crunchyroll. This show looks amazing and it’s one of those romance shows I catch every now and then. Typically, animes like this wind up being really good ones. It doesn’t hurt that Aniplex of America has been on quite the run lately!!
The anime series will be produced by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Blue Exorcist) and has signed on Record of Grancrest War’s Mamoru Hatakeyama as director with Yuko Yahiro (Haikyu!!, Attack on Titan: Junior High) serving as character designer as well as chief animation director alongside Hiroshi Yakou (Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie Part 3: Rebellion) and Yuko Hariba (The Asterisk War). Kei Haneoka from Owarimonogatari and Tsukimonogatari will be handling the music for the series. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War premieres on Hulu, Crunchyroll, and FunimationNow on January 12th.
This smart high school comedy follows Kaguya Shinomiya (played by Aoi Koga of Angel’s 3Piece, Two Car), the heir of one of the most wealthy conglomerates in Japan, and Miyuki Shirogane (played by Makoto Furukawa of Fate/Apocrypha, One Punch Man), the student body president of Shuchiin Academy. Both Kaguya and Miyuki are seemingly perfect from those looking in from the outside.
While the two have an inherent understanding of their romantic interest for one another, both believe that in love, the one who confesses first is the loser! Thus, a hilarious battle of cunning and wits ensues between the two with many attempts made by both sides to force the other to profess their interest despite neither of them being able to afford conceding their position. The two main characters’ highly cerebral warfare is amusingly commentated by the narrator, voiced by Yutaka Aoyama (Gintama, Black Clover). The cast also includes Konomi Kohara (The irregular at magic high school THE MOVIE -The Girl Who Summons the Stars-, Asobi Asobase –workshop of fun-), Ryota Suzuki (Record of an MMO Junkie, FLCL Alternative), and Yumiri Hanamori (Laid-Back Camp, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime).
